The Beginnings of Kyoenji Temple

The origins of Tojinmachi (around 1599) are believed to date back to the time when Toyotomi Hideyoshi retreated from his invasion of Korea (the Bunroku-Keicho War), and the Saga Nabeshima Domain brought intellectuals and engineers from the Korean Peninsula and the continent to settle there. Later, on January 11, 1626 (the third year of the Kan'ei era), when the Tokugawa shogunate took over, Kenbutsu-zan Jodo-in Kyoen-ji Temple, was founded to manage the Tojinmachi residents. 鏡円寺のはじまり

豊臣秀吉による朝鮮出兵（文禄・慶長の役）の撤退の際に、佐嘉鍋島藩に連れてこられた朝鮮半島、大陸出自の知識人や技術者たちを居留させたのが唐人町の始まり（1599年ごろ）と考えられています。その後、徳川に世に移った寛永三年（1626年）１月11日、唐人町に住む人たちを管理するために創建されたのが見佛山浄土院鏡円寺です。詳しいことはアーカイブ内の資料をご覧ください。
